Exploring the Wonders of Seasons
At YWCA Minneapolis Early Childhood Education centers, we believe in engaging our young learners in hands-on experiences that make learning fun and memorable. In September, we partnered with The Science Crew for an exciting educational journey with our little learners to unravel the mysteries behind the changing seasons!
A World of Discovery
One of the event’s highlights was the exploration of the four seasons. Our children discovered how the Earth’s tilt causes the sun to tilt toward and away from it, creating distinct seasons. It was heartwarming to see their faces light up with excitement as they grasped this fundamental concept of astronomy. As one child enthusiastically shared,
“I learned that the sun tilts toward and away from the sun. That’s how we get seasons!”
Hands-On Learning at Its Best
They all had the chance to “make the Earth wobble,” mimicking Earth’s axial tilt, and witness firsthand how this simple yet complex process results in the changing seasons we experience throughout the year.
Another activity was the challenge of “keeping leaves alive.” Children learned about the natural processes that occur in trees during the fall season and how leaves change color before falling to the ground. Through this experiment, they gained an appreciation for the intricate workings of nature.
Falling Into Fall
As the event concluded, it was evident that exploring the science of seasons was the perfect way to transition into the autumn season. The knowledge gained during this event will stay with our preschoolers as they continue to observe and appreciate the world around them, no matter the time of year.
