On Thursday, October 26 YWCA Minneapolis Girls and Youth Department will celebrate our 4thAnnual Lights On Afterschool event. We will join over 1 million youth program advocates across the country in educating our communities about the importance of out-of-school time programming.

Join YWCA’s Afterschool Event

YWCA Girls and Youth Staff will host a table in the lobby at YWCA Midtown with interactive games, prizes, literature about afterschool, statistics on the impact of afterschool programming and a snack.

Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights on Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.

How does YWCA Minneapolis keep the lights on afterschool?

YWCA Girls and Youth programs are comprehensive out-of-school time programs that focus on:

  • Positive youth development
  • School success
  • College preparation
  • Career readiness

Learners and Leaders of Change

Programs take place year-round in conjunction with public school schedules. YWCA Girls and Youth programs prepare 1,500+ girls and youth annually to be leaders, learners and creators of change so they graduate from high school ready for college and careers. Programs operate in three areas: YWCA Beacon Learning Centers, Girls Incorporated and Healthy Life Choices.
