Feeling Love, Connection and Accomplishment: Racing in YWCA Women’s Triathlon

In this Q&A, one triathlete shares her story about racing in YWCA Women’s Triathlon and what keeps her motivated year to year. YWCA Women’s Triathlon will take place on Sunday, August 11. Be a part of the action – sign up to volunteer!

How did you find out about YWCA Women’s Triathlon?

My daughter originally told me about it. She is a participant, too.

Why do you continue to race?

I love the community of women who race every year and feeling the love, connection and accomplishment.

What are some nutrition tips you have to offer?

For the off-season, eat until you are full and then leave the rest. This is contrary to what we learned growing up, but it is better advice. For race day, I always have a banana early in the morning and no coffee. I look forward to getting coffee after the race!

How do you train for the race?

I go to the health club regularly to work out on the stationary bike when it is too cold outside – and I swim when I can. I usually walk every day year-round and try to run part of the time.

I want to stay strong and healthy in my 70s and beyond!

Do you have a goal for the next race?

This year, I hope to improve my swimming. I was a water safety instructor when I was in college and a swimming teacher, but I am a slow swimmer.

What advice would you give to those who are considering racing?

Have fun and feel good about the results no matter what. It is one of the most exciting times you will ever experience.
