How Will You Mark the Anniversary of This Significant Day?

Today marks the anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. King's inspirational challenge to each of us: his "I Have a Dream" speech. This day provides us with an opportunity for reflection and action. With each step taken during the march, hope moved forward, a commitment to change drove both marchers and supporters, and our country inched toward the dream of equity.
Today, we have taken steps both forward and back. What is your recollection of hearing the "I Have a Dream" speech for the first time? What inspires you to march toward equity? We have many steps to take in our community. We know that educational and employment disparities in Minnesota are worst in the nation. We also know that many community organizations, educational institutions and private companies are committed to erasing those disparities. How will you engage in that work?Attorney General Holder and Congress may remove the mandatory drug sentences that have incarcerated huge percentages of young black men throughout our nation. Will you raise your voice to make sure these mandatory sentences are removed and our country moves toward more equitable policies? The YWCA of Minneapolis hosts It's Time to Talk: Forums on Race in October. Will you join the conversation? The YWCA also provides ample opportunities to join the march for equity and the elimination of racism throughout the year.Do not let this day pass solely as a remembrance. Use this day to identify one step you will take to join the movement. Together, we can create positive change.
