Every year, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration or aren’t sure how to register. That’s why YWCA Minneapolis helps register voters and shares information about the importance of voting on National Voter Registration Day, which happens to be today!
The Power of Local Elections
This November, communities across the country will be voting for county commissions, school boards, mayors, judges, bond issues and more. While it’s not a national election year, we can’t forget that powerful change can occur at the local level. Local elections have major impacts on our day-to-day lives from the quality of our roads and transit systems to the schools our children attend.
What Do YOU Care About?
Voting is one of the most foundational ways to advocate for what you care about, but to exercise this basic right, you must be registered to vote!
Here’s how you can be part of National Voter Registration Day:
- Register to vote online: If you've never voted, if you’ve moved or changed your name since the last election or you haven't voted in five years, you need to register to vote or update your voter registration.
- Visit YWCA Minneapolis: Stop by one of our Downtown, Midtown or Uptown locations to pick up information about the upcoming elections, find your polling place, see what's on your ballot and find out what you need to vote. YWCA voter engagement tables will be staffed at various times throughout the day on September 26 (National Voter Registration Day) and the week leading up to Election Day, October 31 – November 7. If we’re not there, feel free to take printed information and resources from the table to help you get ready to vote!
- Mark your calendar: Election Day is Tuesday, November 7, 2017! Most polling places are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.
- Spread the word: Once you make sure you’re registered, connect with your networks about voting, ask friends and family to join you in registering and make a plan for Election Day.
