The First Virtual It's Time to Talk: Forums on Race

Last week, more than 750 people joined us for the first-ever virtual It’s Time to Talk: Forums on Race™. In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, many people grew more sensitive to issues of racial injustice and were activated to create change. In its 18th year, this event became increasingly crucial as a space for racial justice engagement that is open to all people, no matter where they are in their racial justice journey.

“This event is an incredible opportunity for people to engage in critical racial justice work. Change is needed and we can work together to achieve it. As a community, we must work in partnership to dismantle systemic racism and rebuild our community,” said Michelle Basham, YWCA Minneapolis president and CEO. 

A Critical Analysis of Islamophobia, Xenophobia and Racism

This year's event featured a fireside chat with nationally-renowned speaker, author and thought leader Khaled Beydoun, and award-winning author and professor of History and Asian American Studies, Dr. Erika Lee. This eye-opening discussion provided a critical analysis of how Islamophobia, xenophobia and anti-Black racism intertwine -- and how these issues emerge both across the nation and at home in Minnesota. The event concluded with a Facebook Live Q&A with Khaled Beydoun led by YWCA’s racial justice training coordinator.

Facilitated Dialogues

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, we shifted this event to a virtual platform, which has its own unique challenges and opportunities. Due to technical issues, some guests were not able to access our facilitated dialogues, one of the most treasured parts of It's Time to Talk. These conversations are being rescheduled so that all guests have the chance to take part in these honest and thought-provoking dialogues.
