YWCA Minneapolis Hosts Race Against Racism 5K Event on August 8

MINNEAPOLIS – YWCA Minneapolis is hosting a new community event this year – Race Against Racism 5K. The race is an accessible 3.1-mile run/walk on a flat course around Lake Nokomis on August 8, 2021, beginning at 9:00 am. Joining this run/walk supports YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women, and helps raise awareness of racism as a public health crisis.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that racism, both structural and interpersonal, has a direct, negative effect on the mental and physical health of millions of people in America. This is even more intensified as our nation continues to face the intersecting crises of COVID-19 and racism. Racers have the option to fundraise to support YWCA’s programs that work to facilitate dialogue, learning and action to advance racial equity. Participants will also be connected with resources to engage more with issues of health and racial disparities in our communities. “Race Against Racism is an opportunity for us to come together in the spirit of health and solidarity to raise awareness of this public health crisis and support YWCA’s Racial Justice programs. Together, we can address health disparities and inequities by promoting health and wellness for all,” said Angela Myles, YWCA Minneapolis vice president of Racial Justice. “After a year of virtual events, we are excited for our community of athletes, supporters and social justice advocates to come together in person and draw on our strength and resilience as we promote health equity and racial justice,” said Rachael Weiker, YWCA Minneapolis engagement director. YWCA Minneapolis’ signature fitness event, the Women’s Triathlon, which is usually held on the second Sunday in August, was canceled this year due to the complexities of holding the event during the ongoing pandemic. Race Against Racism 5K will be a smaller event held in a safe, socially distanced outdoor setting and will be open to all ages and genders. Strollers are welcome and children 10 and under can join for free. Learn more at ywcampls.org/5k
