YWCAs Unite at the Minnesota State Capitol to Advance its Mission, Strengthen Communities

MEDIA ADVISORY:

(Minneapolis, Minn.) For the first time, the four sister YWCAs in the state of Minnesota – YWCA Minneapolis, YWCA St. Paul, YWCA Duluth and YWCA Mankato – will come together to host YWCA Day on the Hill at the Minnesota State Capitol on March 27.  The day will begin with a rally in the Capitol Rotunda at 10:00, with meetings later in the day with legislators to encourage forward movement on bills relevant to YWCA's mission of eliminating racism, empowering women and girls, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

Four bills in the legislature this year, in support of YWCA Minneapolis, include the Capital Investment Bill to support capital projects for YWCA’s Downtown, Midtown and Uptown locations; Workforce Development/Teacher Training Bill; Early Childhood Education Program Funding Bill; and Girls and Youth Program Funding Bill.

An unprecedented event, Day on the Hill is one Minnesota initiative in support of YWCA USA’s Until Justice Just Is campaign to confront systemic racism. “We applaud the advances the legislature has made during the 2023 season to eliminate racism and empower women and girls, and hope for continued steps forward,” says Shelley Carthen Watson, president and CEO of YWCA Minneapolis.

Minnesota YWCAs advocate for and serve tens of thousands of individuals and families annually in the areas of racial justice, early childhood education, girls and youth development, housing, employment and economic development and health and wellness.
