Celebrate Lights On Afterschool 2016 with YWCA Minneapolis

Lights On Afterschool

On Thursday, October 13, the YWCA Minneapolis Girls and Youth Department will celebrate our 3rd annual Lights On Afterschool event. We will join over 1 million youth program advocates across the country in educating our communities about the importance of afterschool programming.

What is Lights on Afterschool?

Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities.Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions of kids need quality afterschool programs.

How Does YWCA Minneapolis “Keep the Lights On” Afterschool?

Our Girls and Youth programs provide comprehensive, high-quality afterschool activities that focus on positive youth development, school success, and college and career readiness. Programs take place year-round in conjunction with public school schedules. More than 1,500 girls and youth participate annually to be leaders, learners and creators of change so that they graduate from high school ready for college and careers. Programs operate in three areas: Beacon Learning Centers, which are located in North Minneapolis at Hmong International Academy and Franklin Middle School; Girls Incorporated at YWCA Minneapolis; and the Healthy Life Choices Program.
