How to Overcome These 8 Common Excuses to Skip Your Workout

We’ve all been there - finding ourselves making up every excuse in the book to skip a workout. Here are some of the top excuses for skipping a workout and how to defeat them.

“I’m tired” or “I don’t have the energy today”

Yes, we are all tired. However tired you may be, working out has been shown to actually leave you feeling better and more energized than when you started.

“I don’t know what to do”

There are so many resources out there to assist you in finding out which exercises will be best for you. Schedule a personal training session or even just ask a trainer for ideas. They will be happy to help! Otherwise the internet is full of workout videos, ideas and tips (like our trainer tips video blog).

“I’m sore”

Great, that means you’re working hard! When you are sore it’s important not to overdo it, but it’s also important to keep your body moving. Swimming laps, attending a Body Flow or yoga class, or doing light cardio and bodyweight exercises will help give your body the time it needs to heal while still staying active.

“I don’t have the motivation”

Revisit your goals and remember why you started in the first place. If you are struggling with motivation, start with doing exercises, classes or activities that you truly enjoy to put the fun back in working out.

“I don’t have time”

If something is a priority, we will make time for it. Try scheduling it on your calendar like you would any other commitment and stick to that time! If conflicts keep coming up during your usual workout time, switch it up! For example, if you normally workout after work, but you find yourself working late more often than not, try working out in the morning or over lunch.

“I have nothing to wear”

The gym definitely isn’t a fashion contest. Grab your old T-shirt and baggy shorts and hit the road! The most important thing is that you’re comfortable and can move while working out.

“I’m bored of the same workout routine”

Changing up your workout routine every 4-6 weeks can help tremendously. Try new exercises like Kettlebells or TRX, or classes like Total Body Boxing or Boot Camp to challenge yourself and keep things interesting.

“I’m too stressed to workout”

We’ve all been there. We have a million things going on and the last thing we want to do is go to the gym. However, taking a break from the stress of life and escaping to the gym can be one of the best things for you. Exercise has been shown to reduce stress and actually improve concentration and alertness. When you get done with your workout you will feel refreshed and ready to focus on what needs to get done.
