Over 1,400 Triathletes Swim, Bike, Run their Way to Athletic Goals and Beyond
The weather was beautiful, the energy of the crowd was buzzing and the inspiration was boundless. On Sunday, racers, volunteers and fans gathered at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis for the 11th Annual YWCA Women's Triathlon. Girls and women, ages 11 through 80, swam, biked and ran their way through the beautiful course YWCA Women's Triathlon calls home.
“Best Experience Ever”
There was a great mix of racers out there on the course – from first-time racers, to family relay teams spanning three generations, to best friend fundraising teams, to elite athletes.One participant shared that it was the first triathlon she’s ever done and “it was truly the best experience ever!” and that she will be back with many friends next year.Another triathlete, Mai Kou, shares why she was glad to be back after a 3-year break to race in her second YWCA Women's Triathlon:
Elite Race
In the elite race, the winner was local athlete Christina Roberts, 31, finishing in 1:08:06 – more than a minute faster compared to her third place finish time in 2017. Second place went to Kelly Trom, age 31, in her YWCA Women's Triathlon debut, with a total time of 1:10:30. Rounding out third place was YWCA Fundraising Team member Jennifer Fitzharris-Funk, age 43, with a finish time of 1:13:20.
SuperSprint
In the SuperSprint, the shorter distance race option, the winner was Greta Hinds, age 13, coming in at 41:01. Second place was Miaja Cassidy, age 52 at 41:21, and third place was Polly Curran, age 13, with a finish time of 41:46.
Relay Team
The Relay Team winner was: Team “Spontaneous Combustion” – Dawn Prinsen, Bronwyn Cole and Josie Walton in a finish time of 1:21:11.
