From Colorado to Community: David and Jenessa’s Journey to YWCA Minneapolis
When David and Jenessa relocated to Minneapolis, they didn’t just find a gym—they found a community. Learn how they transformed their own health and wellness through YWCA Minneapolis, and why they’re passionate about supporting our mission to uplift the community.
From Mountains to Lakes
David and Jenessa made Minneapolis their home in 2023. David, a software engineer with roots in Minnesota, recalls his childhood visits to YWCA Uptown in the '90s. “Finding a recreational gym with weightlifting equipment was challenging,” he reflects. “I remembered the YWCA and decided to check it out last summer.”
Jenessa, originally from Kansas, enjoys the vibrant atmosphere of Minnesota, even as she anticipates her first real winter. Together, they are raising four children: 17-year-old twins, a 15-year-old and an 11-year-old.
Building Connections
After the closure of YWCA Uptown, David and Jenessa transitioned to YWCA Midtown. When asked what keeps them connected to YWCA Minneapolis, Jenessa highlights the welcoming environment: “I’ve never made friends at a gym before, but here, the community is diverse and friendly. We’ve connected with fellow weightlifters who offer support.”
David adds, “I care about YWCA Minneapolis because I want to support a non-profit that uplifts the community. Unlike commercial gyms focused on profit, YWCA is dedicated to helping others. It feels great knowing my membership contributes to that mission.”
Family Wellness
Finding a family-friendly fitness space can be challenging, but YWCA Minneapolis provides options for everyone. Jenessa comments on the variety of group fitness classes that foster connection among members, as well as the wide range of equipment available for individual workouts. She shares, “It’s amazing that my youngest feels comfortable here. It’s not just a gym for adults; it’s a place for kids to explore their health, too.”
YWCA Minneapolis offers a dedicated Kids Zone, providing free childcare for parents while they work out. This lets parents focus on their wellness journey with peace of mind, knowing their children are well cared for.
In addition to the child care options, our diverse range of in-person and virtual fitness classes makes it easy to find classes that fit your schedule and fitness level. Jana, our Group Fitness Manager, highlights the beginner-friendly nature of our offerings, saying, “our instructors are skilled at adapting to the diverse needs of all participants.” Explore our full class schedule.
For families looking to enjoy quality time together, our leisure pool offers a fun, relaxing space for everyone. David, for example, enjoys using the leisure pool for family swimming outings.
For those seeking a more challenging workout, our facility also features a 25-yard, six-lane lap pool. We offer group swim classes for swimmers of all skill levels, ensuring everyone from beginner to advanced can find a class that meets their needs. Learn more about our aquatics area.
Mental Health Benefits
Mental health is a significant concern in today's fast-paced world. According to Dr. Vivek Murthy, the Surgeon General¹, 33% of parents report higher stress levels compared to 20% of other adults. David and Jenessa have experienced firsthand the positive impact of exercise on mental well-being.
David struggled with chronic back pain in the past. He adds, “When I exercise regularly, I feel better about myself. I’m doing what I need to do to feel stronger and healthier.”
Studies, such as one from UCLA Health, show that people who exercise regularly report fewer mental health "down days²"—decreasing by up to 40%. For Jenessa, the gym has become a vital outlet for managing anxiety. “Going to the gym allows me to give that kind of energy a better place to go,” she explains. The friendships she formed at YWCA Minneapolis have also helped her feel more connected, which has been invaluable in managing her anxiety.
Advice for New Members
Jenessa admits she was concerned about whether a gym membership would be worth the cost. “I can confidently say that the investment is well worth it. There’s so much available, especially for families,” she assures.
David echoes her sentiments, sharing his frustrations with commercial gyms that often overlook member feedback. “YWCA Minneapolis is responsive to people’s needs, and that makes a big difference.”
YWCA Minneapolis is committed to bridging the wellness gap. Our family memberships are designed for families of all sizes, we also provide scholarships to those who qualify and partner with various health insurance providers for discounted rates. Learn more about our membership options.
Hope for YWCA Minneapolis
David and Jenessa recognize the importance of YWCA Minneapolis’s mission. David states, “There are many areas organizations should be focusing on, like child care and advancement opportunities. I’m excited to see YWCA Minneapolis continue to focus on developing these programs.”
Jenessa agrees, highlighting the critical role of child care: “With child care available, parents can pursue education and careers they might not have been able to otherwise. I think that’s incredible!”
YWCA Minneapolis’s child care programs focus on whole-child development—nurturing social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth while supporting self-esteem. Our Workforce Development program also helps aspiring educators gain the skills they need to advance in the early childhood education field. Learn more about our early child care program.
